You’ve signed the contract, picked your floor plan, and now comes one of the most exciting steps in the homebuilding journey—your design consultation! This is where your vision starts to take shape as you begin selecting the finishes that will bring your dream home to life. Whether you're building in the peaceful community of The Reserve at Crystal Lake in Commerce Township or the charming and vibrant Meadows of Cherry Hill in Canton, the design consultation is your chance to get creative and make your new home feel like you.

At Evergreen Homes, we want this experience to be as seamless and inspiring as possible. With a little prep and a sprinkle of inspiration, you’ll walk into your design appointment ready to make confident, exciting decisions for your future home.

Preview Your Options

Before your consultation, you’ll receive a link to a Google Drive folder with available selections for your home - flooring, bathroom tile, kitchen backsplash, countertops, cabinetry, and more. Think of it as your digital mood board—a first peek into all the stylish finishes that will bring personality and polish to your space.

Just a quick note: While these digital previews are super helpful, colors and textures can look a little different in person. That’s why you’ll get to see and touch everything at your appointment, so don’t stress if something looks a little off on-screen—it might just be your new favorite once you see it in real life!

Design consultations currently take place at our design center located inside the model home at The Reserve at Crystal Lake. Please note that this location may change in the future, so be sure to confirm with your Evergreen Homes team when your appointment is scheduled.

Get Inspired!

Lifestyle Images (20) If you’ve ever decorated a space or even binge-watched home design shows, you know the power of inspiration. Now’s the time to gather all the ideas that excite you.

  • Start a Pinterest board or photo album with the styles, finishes, and vibes you’re drawn to. Whether you love clean modern lines or cozy rustic charm, having visual references will help your design consultant understand your style.
  • Walk through the model home at The Reserve at Crystal Lake—it’s full of professionally selected finishes that may spark new ideas or help you solidify what you love.
  • Check with your builder about any homes under construction that might be far enough along for a walk-through. Touring real homes-in-progress is a great way to see materials in context.

Bring Your Wish List

Think about the design elements that are must-haves for your lifestyle and style. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of a rich, espresso-toned kitchen with quartz counters, or you love the airy, light wood floors you saw on your favorite HGTV show. Make a short list of your “can’t live without” elements so you can prioritize those first.

This is also a great time to decide where you want to spend a little more for things that matter most to you—and where you might be happy with standard selections.

Don’t Forget the Details

At this appointment, you will decide where you want can lighting throughout the home. Think about how you’ll use each space and where additional lighting would be helpful—like above a kitchen island, in the great room, or over the dining area.

You should also come prepared with any custom electrical ideas—things like extra outlets, specific locations for wall-mounted TVs, or charging stations in key spots. These are the kinds of functional details that can make a home feel truly tailored to your life.

Other Helpful Tips to Make the Most of Your Appointment

  • Review your budget. Know what’s included in your design allowance and where you’re open to upgrading if something you love is outside the standard package.
  • Bring your decision-makers. If you're building with a partner, come together so you're aligned—or ready to compromise.
  • Ask questions. Your design consultant is there to support you. They’ll help you balance aesthetics, functionality, and value.
  • Take notes and photos. As you make decisions, document your choices. It’s helpful to refer back to as your home progresses.
